Encourage Your Representative to Join the Fight for Church-State Separation

Just yesterday, I joined staff of the Center for Freethought Equality to drop off folders to members of Congress. These folders contained a welcome letter and information on the Congressional Freethought Caucus (CFC), designed to encourage them to join. To my pleasant surprise, one staffer told me that she had “literally just read a letter from a constituent” asking her boss to join the Freethought Caucus. Your outreach matters!

With Donald Trump threatening to destroy the separation of church and state, your U.S. Representative needs to prioritize the preservation of our secular democracy. For years, we’ve been organizing a working group of Members of Congress dedicated to leading that fight. Take just a moment NOW to urge your representative to join the CFC.

The Caucus has four objectives:

  • Promote public policy formed on the basis of reason, science, and moral values.
  • Protect the secular character of our government by adhering to the strict Constitutional principle of the separation of church and state.
  • Oppose discrimination against atheists, agnostics, humanists, seekers, religious and nonreligious persons, and to champion the value of freedom of thought and conscience worldwide.
  • Provide a forum for members of Congress to discuss their moral frameworks, ethical values, and personal religious journeys.

Co-chaired by Representatives Jared Huffman (D-CA) and Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the CFC is the gathering place for every Member of Congress who wants to lead the fight for church-state separation – whether they’re Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or humanist like us.

Here’s why our work to establish and build the Congressional Freethought Caucus matters:

  • It’s our way of bringing together the national leaders who care most about church-state separation, and making sure they have the information they need to defend it.
  • It helps us demonstrate that church-state separation is an issue supported by people of all faiths – not just humanists and atheists.
  • It helps us encourage Members of Congress to advance legislation and advocacy that protects nonreligious people – both in the US and worldwide.

The more members we have in the Congressional Freethought Caucus, the stronger our movement for true religious freedom in America will be.

And your Member of Congress is most likely to join the CFC if they hear from their constituents—from you.

Write to them now – and share this call to action with your friends – to encourage them to join this growing group of lawmakers and help us increase the visibility and influence of humanists and nontheists in Congress, while advancing secularism in these unprecedented times.

If your Representative is already a CFC member, the system will automatically generate a thank-you message.
