AHA Files Amicus Brief in Greece v. Galloway Case Challenging Legislative Prayer

In order to keep U.S. religious institutions and government from adversely affecting each other, the American Humanist Association is urging the Supreme Court to uphold a lower court decision that keeps the Town of Greece, NY away from religious endorsement supported with exclusively Christian prayers during council meetings. Oral arguments in the case, Town of Greece v. Galloway, were heard on November 6. The AHA has filed an amicus brief (with others) supporting the church-state separation guaranteed by the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause.

“Everyone is best served when government doesn’t prioritize one religion over another,” said American Humanist Association Executive Director Roy Speckhardt. “It would be a major disservice to religious and non-religious Americans alike if the Supreme Court decided to use this case to remove any church-state separation protections that keep everyone’s religious freedoms intact.”
