Are humans worth keeping around?

(Re: Notes From a Curmudgeon, Humanist Network News, Feb. 10, 2010.)

As one curmudgeon to another, I have to ask, what makes you want to save even the non-fundamentalist humans on earth?

As you noted, humans are primarily greedy, destructive and selfish.  They can be downright mean and nasty to each other, to the rest of the world's creatures and to the planet–especially if money, property, territory/country/tribe, politics or religion are involved.

Why save humans? Let dolphins, whales and birds, or our "lower" primate relatives, evolve to run the show–if they can survive us!

If you insist on keeping human people around, why not send humanists and non-religionists of all stripes to a lovely planet elsewhere, leaving this seriously damaged (although still beautiful) planet to those professing faith in mythological supreme beings (except, perhaps the Flying Spaghetti Monster)?
