Empathy for Alienated Atheist
(Re: Ask Richard: Atheist Nursing Students Treated as Pariahs, Humanist Network News, Feb. 17, 2010.)
The plight of the nursing student was touching, to say the least. Here in India, people are not outright antagonistic towards atheists, but one does feel a sort of alienation now and then.
However, I have found that arguments fail where there is a god involved. The only way for an atheist to persuade others that we are good people is to develop and project a confident, truthful, honest, helpful and sincere persona to show that such characteristics can be developed without a belief in God, too. It is possible to lead a good life without believing in a supernatural power or indulging in mindless rituals.
